Cappadocia is one of the three places on earth where balloons fly almost every morning of the year, and there is a reason every photograph of Türkiye seems to come from here. You are collected from your hotel in the dark, driven to the launch field, and served tea while the envelopes are inflated around you — that part alone is worth waking up for. Once airborne, the pilot works the wind layers to drop into the valleys and then climb back to 800 metres for the wide view over Göreme, Love Valley and the Rose Valley. The flight ends where the wind decides, our chase crew finds you, and you land to a toast and a certificate.

Our pilot had been flying here since 2008 and pointed out things we'd have missed from the ground. Landing was so soft we didn't feel it. The champagne is a nice touch but the certificate made my daughter's week.

The pickup was at 4:30 and I was grumpy about it until the tea at the launch field. Watching twenty balloons inflate around you in the dark is the part nobody tells you about. The flight itself was calm, the pilot took us right down between the rock formations twice.
